About Me

I attended the University of Dayton (UD) for my undergraduate studies and quickly found my calling to work with middle school students. During my studies and student teaching experience, I also worked for the university's Write Place as a writing consultant. I was able to share my love for the writing process with both undergraduate and graduate students, and I gained practical experience with writing instruction that shaped me as a teacher today.

I graduated from UD in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Middle Childhood Education, with concentrations in English Language Arts/Reading (ELA) and Social Studies (SS).

After graduating I taught 6th grade ELA/SS in Cincinnati, Ohio (OH). In my first year of teaching, I was challenged to grow as a leader in a diverse community and learned firsthand the importance of diverse representation in lessons. I had an excellent mentor and team to work with and multiple professional development opportunities.

I then went on to teach 5th grade ELA/Reading in Dayton, OH. In this capacity I was able to focus on one subject and especially work on writing and fluency instruction with my students. My favorite part about teaching fifth graders was the chance to connect with my students and watch them grow from fourth graders to leaders of the school.

In the summer of 2016, I got married to my high school sweetheart and moved to Watertown, New York (NY). While in NY, I substitute taught all grade levels and subjects for Watertown City Schools, nannied for multiple families, got a dog, had my daughter, and began the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program at Michigan State University.

In my spare time I enjoy reading and writing, spending time with my family, exploring Northern New York, visiting friends and family in Georgia and Ohio, and making trips to my beloved hometown: Holland, Michigan.

I will graduate this coming May and am very proud of my accomplishments, some of which are displayed in this portfolio. I have missed teaching in a formal setting, but I have been able to spend invaluable time with my family all while furthering my education and professional development to prepare me for my next teaching adventure.
